Abstract

This comprehensive review provides a vital reference for researchers and professionals by consolidating current knowledge on the fundamentals, components, formulation, manufacturing, and advanced evaluation techniques of anticorrosive paints, which are essential for combating the substantial global economic costs of metallic corrosion. It details the physicochemical composition of paints, covering binders, the shift to sustainable water-based solvents, and various pigments, with a special emphasis on the evolution from toxic chromates to modern, eco-friendly alternatives like phosphates. The review examines critical formulation aspects, such as Pigment Volume Concentration, and explains the crucial role of proper surface preparation for adhesion. Furthermore, it analyzes key under-coating corrosion mechanisms like blistering and anodic undermining, and explores diverse evaluation methods, highlighting Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy as a non-destructive tool for assessing coating degradation. Ultimately, this work underscores the multidisciplinary nature of anticorrosive paint design and the continuous need for research toward more efficient and sustainable formulations.
