Abstract

The world is rapidly moving toward the development of sustainable infrastructure, with increasing emphasis on the use of corrosion-resistant materials to improve corrosion control and reduce lifecycle costs. Addressing corrosion control and mitigation during the initial design and construction phases of assets is more beneficial in the long term, particularly in terms of safety, performance, asset longevity, environmental protection, and operational cost-effectiveness. Overall, the global cost attributed to corrosion is estimated to reach trillions of dollars. In general, corrosion is considered to account for approximately 4% of a nation’s GDP, and the continuously increasing environmental risks require immediate and appropriate action. This article focuses on the different types of corrosion and corrosion prevention in the oil and gas industry, particularly those affecting equipment, pipelines, and infrastructure, as well as strategies for mitigating these problems. Corrosion represents a significant challenge in the industry, resulting in safety risks, operational interruptions, and considerable financial losses. The article addresses the following key topics: types of corrosion in oil and gas systems, the impact of corrosion on the oil and gas industry, corrosion monitoring and detection, corrosion prevention methods, best practices in corrosion management, case studies and industry standards, and future trends in corrosion prevention.
